How did you get interested in social work?
As a kid, I used to sit by the window in the evening, see people in their homes, and I was curious about people, curious to learn their stories. I pursued a human services associate’s degree at Monroe Community College, then transferred to Naz. I’ve also gained insights into people’s lives while working as an elementary school substitute teacher in special education, working at a local library, and working as a medical interpreter.
What’s been a surprise during college?
Thanks to my Naz internship in the cardiac unit at Rochester General Hospital, I discovered I enjoy working with older adults, especially at the end of life. I’ve interacted with smart, wise patients with great personalities who are so appreciative of the simplest things I helped with.
When an older person dies, I’ve seen the significant impact that social workers can have on the family. What’s next?
I will pursue my Master of Social Work at Nazareth.
What are you most looking forward to in your life’s work?
I’m most excited about starting my career in social work, continuing both my personal and professional growth, and seeing the impact I can make — as a social worker — on the clients I serve and the community I care about. I truly believe that Naz has given me the education and opportunities I need to build the skills to be an effective, compassionate social worker.I hope to be like a mirror, giving clients the opportunity to see themselves in a different and more positive way. Then they have to do the work, since any change comes from them.
Best experiences?
I’ve made so many meaningful memories during my time at Naz, but what stands out the most are the moments I spent with friends, classmates, and staff — learning together, laughing, and just enjoying each other’s company. Despite our differences, I always felt valued and respected, and that sense of community meant everything. I could share so many great stories, especially from our senior seminar with Professor Jed — he’s truly amazing and made that experience even more special.
What lesson will you take with you from your Nazareth years?
Hard work pays off, and what’s meant for you will always find its way to you.
Who’s had a great impact on you?
The social work team at Naz has had a huge impact on me — not just academically, but personally as well. Many of my professors supported me beyond the classroom, and I’m incredibly grateful for that. Each one of them played a unique and important role in my success, including checking in during hard times and asking if I was OK, showing me I’m valued and belong.
